Healing Process & Washing

A successful hair transplant doesn’t end in the operating room—it continues through a well-managed recovery and proper washing routine. At Adem Köse Clinic, we’ve developed a comprehensive aftercare protocol to ensure your scalp heals naturally and your transplanted grafts thrive without complication.

Understanding the healing phases and following our washing instructions will protect your results and help you feel confident every step of the way.

🗓 1. Timeline of the Healing Process (What to Expect Week by Week)

📍 Days 1–3:

  • You may notice mild redness, swelling, and scabbing in both the donor and recipient areas.
  • It’s crucial to keep your head elevated while sleeping and avoid touching or scratching the treated zones.

📍 Days 4–10:

  • Scabs will begin to harden and fall off naturally.
  • Itching is common, but scratching must be avoided.
  • Gentle washing begins in this phase (see below for instructions).

📍 Weeks 2–4:

  • Shock loss may occur: the transplanted hairs fall out as part of a natural cycle.
  • The skin tone begins to normalize, and sensitivity decreases.

📍 Months 1–3:

  • You’ll experience a dormant period with minimal visible growth.
  • Small new hairs will begin to emerge around the third month.

📍 Months 4–6:

  • Noticeable regrowth begins. Texture may feel soft or curly at first, but improves over time.
  • Density gradually builds as follicles become fully active.

📍 Months 9–12:

  • Final results become visible. The hair thickens, matures, and blends seamlessly with native hair.

🧴 2. First Hair Wash: Step-by-Step Instructions

Your first hair wash is one of the most important moments in post-op care. We recommend doing it on Day 3 or Day 4, following the exact procedure below:

Step 1: Apply Moisturizing Lotion

  • Use the special lotion or foam provided.
  • Gently apply it over the transplanted and donor areas.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes to soften the scabs.

Step 2: Rinse Gently with Lukewarm Water

  • Using a cup or your hands, pour water slowly over the scalp.
  • Do not use strong pressure or showerheads.

Step 3: Apply Medical Shampoo

  • Mix the special shampoo with water in your palm.
  • Tap it gently onto the scalp—do not rub or massage.
  • Let it sit for a few seconds and then rinse thoroughly.

Step 4: Drying the Scalp

  • Pat the area very gently with a soft paper towel or let it air dry.
  • Do not use a hairdryer, towel friction, or blow-drying heat.

Repeat this process once daily for at least 10 days, or as instructed by your clinic coordinator.

🚿 3. Common Mistakes to Avoid While Washing

  • Don’t start washing too early (before Day 3).
  • Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the scalp during the first 10 days.
  • Do not use commercial shampoos, conditioners, or styling products.
  • Avoid hot water or direct shower pressure.
  • Don’t remove scabs manually. Let them fall naturally to avoid damaging grafts.

🧢 4. When Can You Resume Normal Hair Care?

  • After Day 10–14, you may resume regular (but gentle) washing.
  • At Week 3–4, you can start using mild, sulfate-free shampoos.
  • Styling products (gels, sprays) can be reintroduced after 1 month, only if scalp healing is complete.
  • Haircuts (scissors only) can be done after 3–4 weeks.
  • Hair dyeing and chemical treatments should be avoided for at least 3 months.
